What is Vegenaise?

Vegenaise ® is a mayonnaise alternative. The Federal Standard of Identity specifies that mayonnaise must contain eggs. Vegenaise ® is egg free. Therefore, it comes under the FDA category of Dressing and Sandwich Spread. Nevertheless, in taste tests, consumers and food experts consistently identify Vegenaise ® as tasting more like real mayonnaise than other products, including many containing eggs.

What is the difference between the various types of Vegenaise?

Vegenaise ® comes in four types, Original (Blue Label), Expeller Pressed (Green Label), Grapeseed Oil (Purple Label) and Organic (Gold Label). All of the Vegenaise ® varieties are similar except for the Oil used, except that in the case of the Organic Vegenaise, all but one of the ingredients are also third party certified organic. The remaining ingredient is not yet available organic.

All varieties of Vegenaise ® have very similar nutritional compositions except for minor differences in the levels of saturated and unsaturated fat.

Original Vegenaise ® is made with conventional Canola Oil. Canola oil has a neutral taste, and is lowest in saturated fat of all edible vegetable oils. Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

Expeller Pressed Vegenaise ® is made from a more select grade of Canola Oil which has not been treated with any solvents during the extraction process and is also certified to be from non genetically modified seeds. Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

Grapeseed Oil is a premium vegetable oil with a more distinctive taste which is also known for its uniquely healthful properties. See The Grapeseed Oil Story. Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

Furthermore, Vegenaise ® contains no hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fat and no transfat. Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

Why does Vegenaise ® have to be kept in the refrigerator all the time?

Vegenaise ® is fresh! It contains no preservatives. In contrast to mayonnaises which typically use preservatives to reduce rancidity and to prevent the growth of dangerous organisms such as salmonella in the eggs, Vegenaise ® is kept constantly refrigerated to keep it as fresh as the day it was made. Some mayonnaise products can remain unrefrigerated for long periods without refrigeration, but we believe that this shelf stability has been achieved at the expense of freshness and the best possible taste.

I've heard that Canola Oil is bad for you. Why do you use it in your product?

We have researched the rumors circulating regarding the "dangers" of Canola Oil. To date we have seen no foundation nor any credible evidence to support the unsubstantiated statements that have been made. At the same time, there appears to be a large amount of scientific evidence which serves to refute the claims. Those wishing to examine some of this evidence themselves are invited to view the article "Canola: Fiction and Fact" here. If, after doing your own research into the matter, you are still uncomfortable with Canola Oil, we have two other fine choices in Grapeseed Oil and Organic Soybean Oil for you to enjoy.

Do you pronounce it Vegenaise ® or Veganaise? ™

When we first invented Vegenaise ® in the early 70's, the word vegan was not widely recognized. We named it Vegenaise ® for "vegetarian mayonnaise". But today, with so many vegans enjoying our product, we really think that Veganaise ™ is a great name too. So, call it what you will, just ask for it by name.

If I leave Vegenaise ® out of the refrigerator for a while, do I need to be concerned?

Not to worry. Unlike mayonnaise, since Vegenaise ® contains no eggs, there is no health risk associated with lack of refrigeration. We have simply found that Vegenaise ® tastes best when kept refrigerated. Even, if it is accidentally put in the pantry for a day, there is no need to worry. If it still looks and tastes good, it's almost always okay.

Can I freeze Vegenaise?

Not if you want it to remain like mayonnaise. Vegenaise ® is an emulsion of oil and water along with other ingredients. When frozen, the emulsion will break, separation will occur, and all the king's horses and all the king's men, well, you know the rest. As a matter of fact, if at any time, you find that the product has separated, it is almost invariably due to the product getting too cold at some point. Many refrigerators have places in them that can drop below the freezing point at times, so try to watch out for these when placing Vegenaise ® in your refrigerator.

What sizes does Vegenaise ® come packed in?

We produce Vegenaise ® in 16 oz., 32 oz., One Gallon, and Five Gallon sizes.

Where can I buy Vegenaise?

Does Grapeseed Oil Vegenaise ® contain any solvent residue?

A: Grapeseed oil, considered to be a premium quality oil by many chefs, is produced from the seeds and skins remaining behind after grapes are crushed for wine or juice. Since grape seeds contain only a very small percentage of oil, solvent extraction is the only method currently available to produce this fine oil. Most, if not all, of the solvent used in separating the oil from the seeds is evaporated during processing. We believe that any residue which may remain is so minute as to be insignificant, especially when taking into consideration the many benefits of grapeseed oil. Does Vegenaise ® contain any genetically engineered ingredients (GMOs)?

Consumers who are concerned about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) can be confident that our Expeller Pressed Vegenaise, Grapeseed Oil Vegenaise, and Organic Vegenaise ® are completely free of ingredients which have been genetically engineered. While the soy protein used in making all varieties of Vegenaise ® is also GMO Free, we are still seeking a conventional Canola oil which is certified non-GMO for use in our Original Vegenaise.
